TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR ONLINE, a free web-based golf simulator, looks and feels vaguely like the online modes of boxed Tiger Woods games available for consoles and computers. Players start by creating an avatar, then head online to play a variety of courses and tournaments. Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online includes several world class championship courses, such as the launch courses Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass and St. Andrews, with additional new courses made available on.

In an interview with the USA Today, EA Sports president Peter Moore explained the rationale behind offering free play at the same time as paid memberships:
Tiger Woods Pga Tour Game
I know we are going to try to rotate the free courses, but at some point we are going to say it’s time for you to step up and give us some shillings here. But I think our goal is to make sure price doesn’t get in the way. Down the road we’ll find other ways of monetizing, maybe with advertising. But in the short term we’d like to think we can get you inside the game, get you hooked and either sell you subscriptions or sell you micro-transaction…
PGA Tour Online also offers players the chance to connect with golf buddies across the world via friend to friend messaging or in customizable, private Group Tournaments.
According to Moore, PGA Tour Online is not intended for the console audience who may already be fans of the series but for a demographic that the Xbox 360 and PS3 doesn’t always reach. In fact, the average age of players who tried out the open beta was 40 years old.
It’s bringing in a very different demographic than we have typically been used to… The real key to us is to bring in new consumers, but in an unchallenging way and unintimidating way to guys who maybe would not go out and buy Tiger for the Xbox 360 and sit down and play in the living room.
Since the launch of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 99, the franchise has sold more than 25 million units worldwide. The next installment of the yearly series will launch in North America on June 8 on the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and iPhone.
